Is it possible to mock soldiers, criticize capitalism and hope for happiness, dream and dance at the same time? Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) and Kurt Weill (1900-1950) tried to do just that. Their musical theater was always also political thinking in sound, ironically disguised, cleverly sharpened and rousing.
With "Youkali", their songs return to the stage - in a new sound. Matthias Klink, celebrated loge in Munich's "Rheingold" and gifted singing actor, Natalie Karl and the Magnus Mehl Quartet lead through a musical-literary revue that oscillates between jazz club and theater. Classics such as the "Ballad of Mackie Messer", the "Alabama Song" or the bittersweet hit "Surabaya Johnny" appear here in cleverly arranged, often surprising jazz versions.
The singer couple Klink and Karl resurrect characters between defiance and tragedy. In between: Texts that survive because they still hit the mark. In a world in which the "Kanonensong" sounds real again and "Youkali" - that imagined land full of security - still seems unattainable.
A program between longing and satire. Between morality and music.
