In this program you will experience two works that were born out of existential need.
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) composed his String Quartet No. 6 under the shattering influence of the sudden death of his sister Fanny. In order to escape the grief and pain, he "fled" to Switzerland and wrote this chamber music masterpiece in silence and seclusion: dark, urgent and plaintive. No consolation that redeems - rather a passionate lament, a burning look inside. It was to be Mendelssohn's last completed piece.
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote his String Quartet No. 2 in the summer of 1873 in Tutzing, not far from the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk. He had struggled with the piece for a long time, always with the seemingly oversized role model Beethoven breathing down his neck. In the magnificent landscape of Lake Starnberg and the tranquillity of the vacations, the composition succeeded, combining contrapuntal subtlety and lyrical warmth. The main motif contains the notes "F-A-E" - an abbreviation for "free, but lonely". This was the life motto of the famous violinist Joseph Joachim, who was an important friend and musical partner of Brahms. The fact that Brahms chose this motto as his theme gives us a deep insight into his state of mind at the time.
In other words, sadness and despair for Mendelssohn, reflection and loneliness for Brahms. In both cases, consummate mastery of the works. Both carry the theme of "legacy" - as a silent message, as a melody that remains when everything else falls silent.
