Prof. Dr. Frido Mann is one of the most important German intellectuals. His family was expelled from Germany as early as 1933 when his grandfather, Thomas Mann, sought refuge from the National Socialists - first in Switzerland, then in the USA. It was there, in California, that Frido Mann was born in 1940. During his childhood and youth, he experienced emigration first-hand. He himself returned to Germany, obtained his doctorate in Catholic theology in Munich in 1969 and then became a research assistant to Karl Rahner in Münster. Having already completed a degree in music in Zurich and Rome, he then turned to psychology, where he also habilitated in 1981.
After decades of living, working and working in Germany, Mann decided to move to Switzerland this year. The main reason for this is the rise of the AFD and the change in the political climate in this country. He told the SZ: "There are circles in the AfD that are capable of anything.
What constitutes democracy? How can everyone live well together? What role do religion, art, faith and empathy play in this?
Together with other guests, Frido Mann reflects on this complex in conversation with Maximilian Maier. A singer and a pianist will provide the appropriate music.
