"Oberammergau" at Bergson: Robert Löhr in conversation about the Passion Play
On this evening, we will immerse ourselves in his new novel "Oberammergau" with author Robert Löhr. Together with artistic director Christian Stückl and Jesus actor Frederik Mayet, we will devote ourselves entirely to the legendary Oberammergau Passion Play, which turns a small community in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps upside down every ten years: Every third inhabitant takes part in the five-hour plays - an impressive 1,400 perform on stage alone, with half a million visitors traveling from all over the world. It is the longest-running play in history in the world's most famous village. In conversation with our two speakers, we look back at the origins of the plays and the traditional legend surrounding the plague and God's mercy.
In the middle of the Thirty Years' War, Oberammergau is ravaged by the plague in 1633 - until the village vows to play the Passion of Christ from now until eternity, if only God will spare them. It falls to the inexperienced pastor Johannes to put on the play. In a very short space of time, he has to transform peasants and shepherds into apostles and Romans - without costumes, without a stage, without a text. And he also has a powerful opponent: the head of the village, Agnes, has lost both her children to the epidemic, has broken with God and is doing everything she can to thwart the plan. The village soon splits into friends and foes of the Passion. And John has to move heaven and hell to defeat Agnes, the plague and his own doubts...
