Staying Mentally Healthy—What Gives Us Strength in Everyday Life
In Germany, one in four people receives a psychiatric diagnosis at some point in their lives. But where does a perfectly normal crisis end, and where does a mental illness begin? And what can we do ourselves to maintain our mental stability? Prof. Dr. Peter Falkai explores these questions at the Bergson Academy. He is one of Germany’s leading psychiatrists, director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at LMU Munich, and was recently awarded the Jean Delay Prize by the World Psychiatric Association, the highest honor in his field. Falkai discusses risk and protective factors, as well as the role of sleep, nutrition, social contacts, and—above all—exercise, whose impact on mental health he believes is still underestimated. He explains how to establish daily routines, what personal responsibility means in psychiatry, and why the stigma surrounding mental illness has diminished but not disappeared. The evening is practical and encouraging, featuring a physician who has shaped the field for more than 30 years and describes himself as an optimist.
Come by and ask Prof. Dr. Falkai your questions—we look forward to seeing you!
