Maxjoseph at the Bergson: A Blend of Folk, Jazz, and Classical Music
What seems easiest is actually the hardest—violin, Styrian accordion, guitar, and tuba—four virtuoso musicians weave a dynamic, chamber-music-like tapestry that blossoms with an elegance and lightness one would not expect in the context of folk music. Jazz shimmers through the improvisations, classical training shines through in their flawless ensemble playing, and the diverse echoes reveal the broad horizons of four global citizens who are, at the same time, deeply rooted in their homeland. This music defies simple categorization and creates a delightful sense of auditory confusion. Maxjoseph’s music is not merely a synthesis of serious and popular music, of old and new, of folk music and classical—it is an invitation to a dialogue in which boundaries blur, yet one remains firmly grounded, rooted in one’s homeland.
“Lagom” is the title of Maxjoseph’s new album and program—music that combines tradition and the present with a keen sense of balance. Inspired by the Swedish term for “just the right amount,” it creates a distinctive sound that straddles holding on and letting go: light-footed, elegant, and full of character. Jazz-like openness, classical precision, and a broad musical horizon combine with deep roots in his homeland to create contemporary folk music that defies categorization.
