You might think this album is a declaration of war. After all, "Reload" means "to reload, to add ammunition". In fact, Marialy Pacheco is a fighter. She has to be. How else would she be where she is? After all, this strong, clever, charming, fun-loving and overwhelmingly romantic woman is the only world-class Cuban jazz pianist in the entire history of music. "Reload" is therefore neither a reload nor a reboot, but rather a reinvention and revitalization that casts every artistic achievement of her pianistic personality in a new, radiant light.
Every note Marialy plays has a meaning. Whether she lets her grand piano speak in full, flowing chords or her fingers fly stormily over the keys, there is always a story, an idea, an experience behind it, because Marialy has already experienced a lot. At the age of seven, she fell in love with the piano and began her training at Havana's most prestigious conservatory, supported by her musical parents, her mother a choirmaster and her father an opera singer. She graduated with honors from the Escuela Nacional de Artes. She then went on to study composition, winning two gold medals as a pianist at the Choir Olympics alongside her mother.
Marialy always had this feeling, this dream of having to leave her Caribbean island home to share her music with the world. In 2005, she took the plunge and stayed in Bremen, where she recorded her first trio album. She moves on, lives in Australia and Japan and in 2012 takes part in the Solo Piano Competition at the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival and wins - again as the first woman in the history of this competition - the 1st prize of the jury. And the audience prize. With "Reload", Marialy Pacheco now presents her twelfth, her most touching and mature work, which contains only her own compositions apart from two Cuban "standards". "I wanted to expand my color palette," she says about the concept of this album. "My Cuban roots grow here in the direction of Latin American traditions and my influences from classical music." Authentic, traditional and yet modern, also thanks to the two young Colombian musicians Juan Camillo Villa on bass and Miguel Altamar de la Torre on drums.
