Kirill Richter & Richter Trio - Album presentation “Towards the Beloved City” (Warner Classics) – A journey of longing and reinvention
Kirill Richter & Richter Trio square

For centuries, Paris has been a place where people arrive in search of themselves, only to find that they are still on their way. Writers, poets, composers and filmmakers have wandered its boulevards, leaving behind echoes of their longing: Hemingway called it "a moveable feast", an experience never to be forgotten.

"I think each of us has a beloved city. It may not have coordinates and only exists in our imagination. But we all long for this place: where we are loved, where someone knows our name, where we no longer have to pack our bags and where we finally feel good enough," says Kirill Richter.

"Towards the Beloved City" is not just an album, it is a map of emotional survival. A cycle of piano waltzes by composer and pianist Kirill Richter that speaks to those who have loved someone they could not reach. Who have stayed in relationships that have dimmed their light. Who have left, not because they have stopped loving, but because they have finally begun to love themselves.

These pieces carry the quiet pain of missed connections, the beauty of small joys, the burden of moving forward with a broken heart, and the hope that there is still a place for you in this world where you are seen, chosen, and safe.

"When I composed this music, I just wanted to tell these stories so that people would feel less alone, so that this music could catch them in their most fragile moments," Kirill Richter goes on to describe. Each waltz becomes the heartbeat of a small cinematic story: poetic, fragmentary, intimate like the pages of an unfinished novel or the lost reels of a nouvelle vague film. They carry echoes of longing, reflections of tenderness, glimmers of hope. This music is for this journey. For the courage to go on. For the moments when your loneliness becomes your dance partner. And somehow you learn to move with it.
