"My 5th Symphony is a cursed work. Nobody covers it", complained Gustav Mahler and revised the instrumentation of his work several times after its premiere in 1904. "The work was written for techno big bands, although they simply didn't exist yet", is the tongue-in-cheek assessment of the bandleader of the Jazzrausch Big Band, Roman Sladek. "Mahler's Breakdown" is the furious arrangement by chief composer Leonhard Kuhn and turns the symphony on its head: almost 110 years later, he continues Mahler's departure into a new musical language just as skillfully as his desire to cast the voices with soloists.
In the 50-minute techno version of the "Sinfonia Maledetta", the Jazzrausch Bigband unleashes its instrumental versatility and sheer power: 15 musicians bring the music of Mahler and Kuhn into the here and now with energetic improvisations - a rave to listen to, a symphony to dance to.
