Eugen Drewermann at the Bergson: God or Mammon?
The question “God or Mammon?” is far more than a religious choice. It touches on the very core of human existence: What sustains our lives? From what do we draw our trust, hope, and freedom? And which principle do we follow—the logic of life or the logic of possessions?
Theologian, psychoanalyst, and writer Eugen Drewermann explores this ancient biblical dichotomy as a mirror of our present age, in which economic thinking increasingly shapes our understanding of what it means to be human. When success, growth, and utility become the measure of all things, people risk losing themselves. Drewermann counters this with the liberating power of a spirituality that judges people not by their achievements, but by their dignity and their capacity to love.
In his lecture, he combines theology, philosophy, and depth psychology into a powerful reflection on fear and trust, power and compassion, possessions and inner wealth. The evening invites us to understand the concept of God not merely as an object of faith, but as a symbol of an attitude toward life that can free people from the constraints of competition and self-assertion.
It is an invitation to reflect on the crucial question: Whom do we serve when we live—Mammon or life itself?
