Earth Matters: Investing in a Better Future
An Evening with Markus Müller (Deutsche Bank)

A Changing World and Its Economic Consequences

Our world is facing profound structural changes. Global interdependencies in energy, raw materials, and technology, along with geopolitical tensions and economic realignments, are increasingly calling existing models of growth, stability, and prosperity into question—and at the same time bringing the question of how to make economic value creation sustainable in the long term to the forefront.

Against this backdrop, capital markets are taking on new significance: They are not only a reflection of these developments but also a central mechanism for enabling transformation, reassessing risks, and further developing economic structures. As a result, they are also becoming a decisive factor in aligning the economy with sustainability and resilience.

As part of our partnership with Deutsche Bank, we are delighted to welcome Markus Müller to the Bergson Academy. As Chief Investment Officer for Sustainability and Global Head of the Chief Investment Office at the Private Client Bank, he brings a comprehensive perspective on the interplay between global change, long-term value creation, and financial markets. The artist Olaf Otto Becker, whose works are on display in the exhibition, will also be present that evening. Olaf Otto Becker (*1959) studied communication design with a focus on photography, as well as philosophy and political science. For more than 30 years, the multi-award-winning photographic artist has been exploring the traces of human activity in nature. His series of works have taken him to remote regions from Greenland to Siberia to Sumatra and along the Gulf Stream. With documentary precision and great visual power, he reveals the vulnerability of our planet. Becker’s works have been exhibited worldwide in numerous museums and galleries, including the Noorderlicht Arena in Groningen (2016), the Visual Arts Center of UT in Austin, Texas (2018), the Saatchi Gallery in London (2023), the Jut Art Museum in Taipei (2024), and the Kunsthalle München (2025).

In his lecture, Markus Müller provides insights into the fundamental forces shaping the current structural transformation. He highlights how dependencies are shifting, what new areas of tension are emerging, and why traditional economic assumptions must increasingly be questioned—including with regard to how economic stability can be secured in the future.

The focus is less on individual asset classes and more on a deeper understanding of the transformation of economic systems and the role of capital in this process: both in the adaptation of existing structures and in the emergence of new ones—and in addressing the question of how economic development can be made resilient and sustainable in the long term.
