Bühne frei im Studio 2 is a legendary series in which the finest jazz is presented once a month - and has been for almost 60 years! Recently, the cult format of Bayerischer Rundfunk has found a new home under a new name in the live club Barbastelle in the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk. Welcome to the BR club concert! This time with the duo Masako Ohta & Matthias Lindermayr.

The two musicians come from different backgrounds. While the trumpeter plays contemporary groove-based jazz with his quintet "Fazer", the classically trained Ohta experiments on the prepared piano. What they both have in common is an irrepressible desire to improvise. They met at the award ceremony for the City of Munich's Music Prize, which they both received in 2019. Ohta admired Lindermayr's delicate, lyrical and dreamy playing. "His tone quality really touched me," she says. "I also really appreciate Masako's sound on the piano," returns the trumpeter. "Very simple chords sound fantastic with her."

The duo's second album, entitled "Nozomi" (Japanese for "hope"), will now be presented live in our club, Barbastelle. You can expect the minimalist and yet extremely poetic language of both musicians. It is precisely this superficial simplicity that puts the deep emotional expression at the center of the action.

Inspired by a trip to Ohta's home country of Japan, most of the works on the new album were given Japanese song titles. Lindermayr recounts a special moment: "We were traveling in Kyoto, and at that time of year the city was crowded. An acquaintance of Masako's took us to a beautiful temple in his neighborhood. No tourists had ever been there. The three of us sat by this rock garden and were completely at peace. We didn't say a word, we just looked at the rock garden." On the surface, Lindermayr uses this episode to describe the special, quiet quality of the music on Nozomi. It is a healing, analog island of contemplation; an implicit statement against the agitated chatter of the present.

A cooperation with BR-Klassik.
