MONACO FRANZE 100 – There's always a little something left
The Bergson Gallery will open a new photography exhibition on 7 November 2026, and we warmly invite you to join us!
On 15 November 2026, Helmut Fischer would have turned one hundred. And since a birthday like that can’t simply be celebrated with Black Forest gateau and a “Hip hip hooray!”, photographer Michael von Hassel thought: “Well, let’s take a look at what has become of Monaco Franze’s Munich 43 years later!”
Under the title MONACO FRANZE 100, he set out to revisit the locations of the legendary TV series – more than 200 of them in total! Apartments, offices, backyards, restaurants, hotels, churches, palaces, streets. Even the surveying office! Von Hassel translates these locations into large-format, intensely colourful photographs. They do not bring the past back, but for a moment they make the present look as though traces of the past are still hidden somewhere within it.
He combines these photographs with historical images of the locations as they appeared in the series. The exhibition thus traces the transformation of the city while exploring memory, transience and the question of what remains of places and experiences from the past.
The exhibition project on Level 3 of the Bergson Gallery will be complemented by a reception at the Bergson Gallery and a special cinema day at the Elektra Tonquartier on 15 November, featuring ten episodes of the cult series on the big screen. The programme will also include a panel discussion exploring the life, work and lasting impact of the unforgettable Munich actor. Moderated by Christoph Leibold (BR), Michaela May, Dr Sybille Krafft and Dr Beatrice Wichmann will offer personal, journalistic and historical perspectives on Helmut Fischer.
You will also have the opportunity to meet actors from Monaco Franze during a Meet & Greet. Drinks at the reception are included in the admission price.
The event is organised by Bergson Kunstkraftwerk in cooperation with the Deutsches Theatermuseum München and Bayern 2.
