360° Organ Sound: Goldberg Variations
Bach’s masterpiece in different acoustic worlds

Karl Richter's 100th birthday at Bergson: Goldberg Variations with Hansjörg Albrecht

On October 15, the legendary conductor and organist Karl Richter would have been 100 years old. He became cantor at St. Mark's Church in Munich in 1951. From here, he toured the world with his "Munich Bach Choir", making recordings and TV recordings that set new standards. Bach and Richter were used almost synonymously, especially in Munich.

In his honor, our Bergson Principal Organist Hansjörg Albrecht plays the Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach. It is said that Bach wrote them for a count who could not sleep at night. His harpsichordist, Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, was to play them for him. In order to entertain him as well as possible, Bach chose variations that are lively and gentle, but also very varied: sometimes light and dance-like, sometimes meditative and immersive, then again virtuosic and overwhelming.

In Hansjörg's organ arrangement, this is particularly colorful, especially because we distribute the sounds of the electronic organ throughout the room, creating a 360° audio experience. An experience that is unique and only possible in "Europe's smartest concert hall".
