"The surface is not only what is visible, but also what leads us to the depths."

(Walter Benjamin)

In its first exhibition BEYOND SURFACE, the new Bergson Gallery on the ground floor and mezzanine of the new building pushes the boundaries of what you have previously known as a portrait.

In paintings, photographs and objects, it not only visualizes the essence of man, it also shows the many faces that buildings can take on, replaces the drawing genius with robots and literally holds up a mirror to its visitors. The portrait is considered the oldest subject in art history and has rarely been objective throughout the ages. It is never just an image of the sitter, but always a reflection of the viewer in exchange with the sum of their knowledge and feelings.

In BEYOND SURFACE, the portrait is understood as an encounter, as a process that harbors an infinite number of variations and manifestations.

The exhibition presents works by Roland Fischer, Olga Migliaressi-Phoca, Tracey Snelling, Florian Süssmayr and Patrick Tresset.

Exhibition duration: September 7 to November 18, 2025
