"Sweet Whispers: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan"
Three voices emerged from her throat—one classical, one pop, and one jazz: Sarah Vaughan, one of the jazz legends of the 20th century, the “musician’s musician,” whose story is rarely told. On March 27, 2024, the legendary American singer would have celebrated her 100th birthday. The multi-award-winning singer-songwriter and leading British jazz singer Zara McFarlane released the album “Sweet Whispers: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan” in Vaughan’s honor, offering her own personal tribute to the great jazz icon.
The album is more than just a collection of some of Vaughan’s most popular songs. It’s not hard to imagine the immense task involved in selecting these songs; after all, Vaughan’s recording career spanned 50 years and included nearly 60 albums (plus nearly 30 more in compilations and box sets). Through a carefully curated selection of songs—the result of months of collaboration with the album’s producer, clarinetist and saxophonist Giacomo Smith—Zara McFarlane takes listeners on a journey through Sarah Vaughan’s musical life, from her first recording to her last, and breathes new life into some of her best-known and lesser-known songs. Zara McFarlane’s live show at Bergson features not only key songs from Sarah Vaughan’s career, but also music by artists who influenced her and helped her sustain her career from her early, legendary debut performance at Carnegie Hall in 1946 through her death in 1990.
