The Mysterious Death of Tchaikovsky and the Bergson Phil’
October 1893: Pyotr Tchaikovsky is at the height of his career. He had just enjoyed tremendous success on a tour of England; he was brimming with creative energy and eagerly anticipating the premiere of his Sixth Symphony, a kind of magnum opus. But within a few days, he slips into a deep depression. His mental state deteriorates rapidly; he withdraws from the world — and dies completely unexpectedly.
What had happened? Was it the cholera that was raging in St. Petersburg at the time? Did he accidentally drink contaminated water? Or was there actually something else entirely behind it — a murder? And what role did Tchaikovsky’s sexuality play in all this?
Maximilian Maier sheds light on this gripping criminal case with insight and wit, while the Bergson Phil’, under the baton of its principal conductor Jesús Ortega Martínez, performs Tchaikovsky’s masterpieces to complement the story: from his Violin Concerto, „The Nutcracker“, the Sixth Symphony „Pathétique”, and „Romeo and Juliet“.
