Terri Lyne Carrington: Social Science at Bergson

With her band “Social Science,” the multi-award-winning drummer, composer, and producer Terri Lyne Carrington—as part of her Distinguished Professorship at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts—presents a concert that combines musical excellence with social relevance: Together with numerous students from the HMTM’s Jazz Institute, she is creating an interactive and collaborative concert experience that focuses on the dialogue between established artists and the next generation.

The program centers on works from Terri Lyne Carrington’s two latest, internationally acclaimed albums. The music transcends stylistic boundaries and blends jazz, improvisation, and contemporary soundscapes with a clear artistic vision:

In their compositions, the band addresses pressing issues of our time—including climate change, migration, gender equality, women’s empowerment, social cohesion, and animal welfare. With great musical expressiveness and an artistic vision shaped by empathy and humanity, Social Science creates space for reflection, exchange, and shared experience.

Large-scale collaborations have defined Terri Lyne Carrington’s work since her GRAMMY-winning *Mosaic Project* (2012), inspired by the Buddhist guiding principle: “Many bodies, one mind.”

This concert is part of the “HMTM vor Ort” series, in which students from the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts perform as guests at various partner institutions.
