Who knows the old stories? "I heard Martha Argerich, but nobody knew her then!" or "I was there when the Beatles played to just a handful of people at the Indra in Hamburg!" And who doesn't think a little enviously: Man, I would have loved to have been there!
With the Steinway Prizewinner Concerts, you can do just that! Experience the best pianists of their generation, the recent winners of the major international piano competitions, up close and personal. And with programs that they have put together themselves and therefore have a very personal character.
Last year, the Honens International Piano Competition in Calgary had a radiant winner: Élisabeth Pion from Canada, who won both the gold medal and the audience prize.
At the Bergson, she plays music by Grażyna Bacewicz, a composer who is very close to her heart. With her Sonata No. 2, she impressively demonstrates why she is one of the most exciting voices of the 20th century. Bacewicz herself was an outstanding violinist, which is evident from the fact that she demands great technical brilliance and writes with a fine sense of timbre. In other words, a bridge to the great virtuoso pianist Frederic Chopin.
His Etudes op. 25 are far more than technical studies. They are poetic character pieces in which virtuosity, songfulness and emotional intensity merge, in short milestones in piano literature.
The concert spans a romantic arc to Franz Schubert's songs in the legendary piano transcriptions by Franz Liszt. Works such as Gretchen am Spinnrade, Der Erlkönig and Auf dem Wasser zu singen transform song into highly dramatic piano music. Liszt transfers Schubert's emotional abysses, images of nature and narrative power to the keyboard - orchestral sound, lyrical intimacy and great emotion included.
