Old Fairy Tales – New Shackles
An Evening About Money, Power, and Personal Responsibility

Money, Power, and Women's Independence

At a time when “tradwife” ideals are making a comeback, financial dependencies persist and are even being further cultivated—subtly, structurally, and with far-reaching consequences. This is precisely where “Old Fairy Tales—New Shackles. On Money, Power, and Female Dependence.” This insightful and thought-provoking book is aimed at everyone who not only wants to believe in equality but also wants to live it.

The authors, Annahita Esmailzadeh—a manager and LinkedIn Top Voice—and Christine Laudenbach, a behavioral economist, combine exclusive data, real-life stories, and unvarnished insights. They show why even successful women often earn less than their male counterparts, why they continue to shoulder a larger share of care work and thereby relinquish financial responsibility—and what all of this has to do with love, gender roles, and social norms. In a personal, well-researched, and surprisingly relatable way, they shed light on where financial dependence begins, the mechanisms behind it, and how financial independence can be achieved.

At the Bergson Academy, we’ll discuss these questions together with the authors. We’ll also welcome Saskia Schlemmer to the panel, a German attorney specializing in family law and divorce law. In addition, she works as an author and podcaster and is a public advocate for greater awareness of the legal and financial consequences of marriage.

The evening will be moderated by journalist and TV host Neda Peemüller.
