How Architecture Sounds and How Music Transforms Spaces
Spaces have an effect on us before we even realize it. A sound that stretches into a long reverberation in a hall, a material that absorbs or reflects footsteps, a space that grows quiet when there is nothing to say: music and architecture often shape our perception without us even noticing. But who actually determines the effect? The composer, the architect, the space itself, or ultimately the audience that enters it? How do music and architecture interact?
Bergson architect Markus Stenger and sound designer, composer, and director Mathis Nitschke will discuss this at the Bergson Academy. In 2003, Stenger founded the Munich-based firm Stenger2, which combines architecture, interior design, lighting design, and architectural theory, focusing on an architecture that demystifies itself and reveals its function. Nitschke works at the intersection of sound, theater, media, and new technologies—for example, on opera and theater productions in Aix-en-Provence and New York, or on Taryn Simon’s sound installation at the Cisternerne in Copenhagen, which transformed an exhibition space into an instrument.
An evening about spaces that make sounds and sounds that build spaces—with time for your questions!
