DEICHKIND – 15 Years of Images, Ideas, and Escalation
An Evening with Filmmaker Timo Schierhorn

From “Leider Geil” to Today: DEICHKIND’s Music Videos at Bergson

From “Leider Geil” to “Könnt ihr noch?”: Not only has DEICHKIND’s music long been an integral and natural part of our cultural heritage, but many of their music videos have also become iconic. For 15 years, they have borne the artistic signature of filmmaker Timo Schierhorn. At the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk, he takes you on a journey through DEICHKIND’s history—and through a time in which our visual culture has undergone radical change.

These videos by Auge Altona—a collective of three filmmakers, including Timo Schierhorn—consistently engage with the visual worlds of their respective times. The evening at Bergson uses selected videos, unreleased material, discarded ideas, and test footage to tell the story of this collaborative work—and of how the music video has evolved during this period.

The focus is on the circulation of images on the internet, on YouTube, fail videos, and meme culture, as well as on the boundaries between high culture and subculture, between professional film production and deliberate amateurism, and between original and copy. Time and again, digital phenomena are recreated using the most real, analog means possible; existing images are appropriated; and sometimes even their own works are copied.

Timo Schierhorn shows you works from various phases of their collaboration and talks about how they came to be: Where do the ideas come from? What happens to a music video when it becomes a meme? Why are some films never released? And what does it mean today to produce visuals for pop music when artificial intelligence has itself become a creator of images?

Amid consumer frenzy, commodity fetishism, and boundless desire, DEICHKIND’s visual world strikes right at the heart of our current group exhibition SUPERMARK€T—and, with a giant backpack from the music video “Richtig gutes Zeug,” brings an extra dose of pop, irony, and anarchy to the Bergson Gallery!
