Bühne frei im Studio 2 is a legendary series in which the finest jazz is presented once a month - and has been for almost 60 years! In the meantime, the cult format of Bayerischer Rundfunk has found a new home under a new name in the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk. More precisely, in our cozy live club, the Barbastelle. Welcome to the BR club concert!

Since the formation of Velvet Revolution in 2015, Daniel Erdmann's instrumental trio has often been confused with "Velvet Underground". The similarity in name prompted the multi-award-winning bandleader and saxophonist to do a little research into the cult New York band founded in the mid-60s. He found their legendary 1967 album with the cover by Andy Warhol in his collection and rediscovered Lou Reed's raw, realistic lyrics, great ballads with simple, haunting melodies and the character voice of Nico, the band's German singer. This listening experience became the starting point and inspiration for Velvet Revolution's new program. Because it was now also about lyrics and vocals, he brought Jelena Kuljić on board. Not only to let her interpret Velvet Underground classics in a new sound environment, but also to write her own compositions on her vocal body. The Serbian-born singer, who came to Germany to study jazz in 2003, has an expressive voice, creative power and enormous charisma. She tours internationally with a number of bands and has been a permanent member of the Munich Kammerspiele ensemble for eleven years. Her presence opens up new creative scope for the unusual trio. With its unique musical narrative style and sound, documented on three CDs, it regularly celebrates success in the jazz charts and on club and festival stages. Violinist Théo Ceccaldi, a ubiquitous player on the French jazz scene, is a master of unexpected sound development. The English vibraphonist Jim Hart combines virtuoso floating moments and the highest percussive precision. And tenor saxophonist Daniel Erdmann - born in Wolfsburg, who became famous in Berlin and has also been rooted in France for more than 20 years - unfolds an undreamt-of depth of sound and expression with his subversively beautiful tone. Velvet Revolution is one of the constant greats in his extensive portfolio of his own bands, and a trio that makes it clear with every note that a velvet revolution in music can only succeed with passion.

A recording of the concert will be broadcast by BR-KLASSIK on Friday, 10.04.2026, in "Jazztime". The concert will be available in the ARD Mediathek afterwards.
