The intensive study of the music of pianist Lennie Tristano, who broke new ground in the bebop era and inspired many "cool jazzers", led alto saxophonist Julian Bossert to found the Cologne quintet "Tristano Unchained". He is also fascinated by a compositional technique in jazz that was already used in the Baroque era.

Since then, the band has devoted itself in particular to so-called contrafacture. This involves creating a new melody over the chord sequence of a familiar piece. Without fixed agreements on form, harmony, tempo or rhythm, they developed spontaneous compositions based on jazz classics. In the spirit of "unchained" - i.e. free and unleashed - music was created in a lively exchange: the musicians listened intensively to themselves and at the same time attentively to each other. The result is an exciting musical dialog.

With their new album "ID Entity", the quintet applies this principle to their own compositions for the first time. Tenor saxophonist Stefan Karl Schmid, pianist Jochen Rückert, bassist Calvin Lennig, drummer Fabian Arends and bandleader Julian Bossert have written their own pieces for the album. In them, they explore their musical identity - as individuals and as a group.

They remain open to new ideas and at the same time draw on their extensive musical experience. The result is finely crafted, multi-layered music that immediately makes you want to listen.
