From an early age, Rüdiger von Fritsch sensed that something unspoken was resonating in his family - a story that was bigger than the tales of his childhood. Only gradually did he realize that it had been the Germans who had brought immeasurable suffering to Europe. Decades later, as an experienced diplomat, he looks back on an eventful life: he negotiated the EU's eastward expansion in Brussels, headed the Federal President's planning staff, was Vice President of the BND, Ambassador in Warsaw and finally in Moscow - always caught between personal past and political responsibility.
In his book "Die Geschichte in mir", he interweaves these external stations with the inner journey that led him to a painful realization: the confrontation with his beloved father, his ideology, and a family history in which his great-uncle Werner von Fritsch also played a significant role - the commander-in-chief of the army, whom Hitler ousted in 1938.
Using his family as an example, Rüdiger von Fritsch creates a panorama of the 20th century. A haunting and literary book that shows how important and how difficult it is to talk about guilt and involvement in one's own family.
