Guided tour at Bergson: Discover EARTH MATTERS and KALO

This exhibition tour offers fascinating insights and background information on the Bergson Gallery’s two current exhibitions, EARTH MATTERS and KALO.

The group exhibition EARTH MATTERS in the new building focuses on the complex interplay between humans, nature, and technology, using artistic approaches that are both analytical and poetic to draw attention to the urgency of treating the Earth with care. Featuring works by Olaf Otto Becker, Andreas Greiner, Kathrin Linkersdorff, Maximilian Prüfer, and Tamiko Thiel, five internationally renowned artists present works that address central questions of our time: the consequences of industrialization, the effects of humanity’s drive for optimization, and the not always predictable consequences of technological developments.

Digital works, photographs, sculptures, and the unique technique of nature typography open up new perspectives on ecological systems, biological life forms, and technical artifacts—and their potential to bring about change and transformation, both with and independently of human intervention. These include landscape photographs from Sumatra that capture the beauty of the jungle forever, and a massive sculpture that resembles a dinosaur skeleton but is actually the skeleton of an oversized broiler chicken.

In addition, we will also visit the exhibition KALO by Munich-based artist Janine Mackenroth in the former coal silos. The focus is on questions of value, capital, and the social coding of materials, particularly in the tension between coal as a raw material and “coal” in the sense of money. Among other things, we are showing stainless steel works fired with bio-propane gas, paintings made from plant-based nail polish in the colors of banknotes, a scent installation, an object made from shredded banknotes, as well as a metal gender star and a nail polish developed specifically for the exhibition. In her work, the artist addresses themes of equality and sustainability.
