Photography, Space, and Perspective with Hubertus Hamm
In collaboration with the Bergson, photographer and media artist Hubertus Hamm is exhibiting works from various phases of his artistic career. During the artist-led tour, visitors will have the opportunity to learn fascinating details and background information as they explore the exhibition alongside the artist.
Outside, the installation VI|EW—with its minimalist appearance—focuses on perception, perspective, and the viewer’s own vantage point. At first glance, the vertical sculptural elements appear as solid, black surfaces. Only through movement and a shift in perspective do they open up and become surprisingly transparent. What becomes visible is thus directly tied to the viewer’s position, allowing them to experience just how much perception changes depending on one’s own vantage point.
On Level 3, “Part 1: Roots | photography” offers insight into the photographic roots of his current artistic practice. The works presented there were created beginning in the early 1990s and demonstrate Hamm’s growing exploration of the possibilities and limitations of photography. Through layering, as well as tearing, folding, and deforming the image carrier, he liberates photography from its classical two-dimensionality and transports it into space. Materials such as metal, glass, and ceramics are also used in this process.
Even in these works, an idea emerges that also shapes VI|EW: The image is not an unchanging counterpart, but is constantly recreated through the interplay of the work, the space, and the viewer.
