Grand Opening of the KÖNIG BERGSON Gallery

On July 12, we opened the spacious gallery space in the new building with a big celebration. The group exhibition METAPHOR TO METAMORPHOSIS is inspired by Franz Kafka and deals with his explorations of identity and transformation in a constantly changing and threatening world. You can see the different ways in which identities can be formed, for example based on nationality, sexuality or certain characteristics. For example, an identity card is on display. When artist Nasan Tur applied for this, he grew a moustache to fit in with the Turkish stereotype.

After the opening speech by gallery owner Johann König and our Director of Visual Arts, Benedikt Müller, the art-loving guests spread out over around 2,000 square meters of exhibition space:

In the new building, paintings and sculptures by over 100 artists can be seen on four levels. On the first level, the focus is on identity in the context of national and cultural-historical borders, while level two shows works that are linked by a specific sense of time and history. Artists such as Marya Kazoun, who recreates a destroyed city out of glass, make trauma and coming to terms with the past visible.

On the third level, the focus is on gender and the body. Artists such as Agnes Questionmark focus on the metamorphoses of the body in their artworks. The fourth and final level of the exhibition focuses on the transformation of materials.

In the atrium and the former coal silos, visitors can marvel at the solo exhibition EVERY MOMENT IS A NEW MOMENT by Danish artist Jeppe Hein, whose mirrored works in particular invite reflection and exchange with fellow human beings.

Cool side effect: take in the beautiful mirrored works of art, such as colorful "balloons", and take the best mirror selfies ever.

The two new exhibitions attracted 1,000 guests on the opening day, who enjoyed the grand opening including cool refreshments, tasty snacks and a virtuoso musical program by our Bergson Artists Flo (saxophone), Jutta (tuba) and Ümit (DJ).
